In-Person or Online Learning: Which Should You Choose?

Is in-person learning better than online learning? Or is online school better than in-person learning? The answer to this question is different for every student.  

There are many benefits to on-campus learning. There are also many benefits to online learning. Ultimately, it depends on finding a program that satisfies your needs, your goals, and your priorities. A quality that’s beneficial for one student might be disadvantageous for another, making it crucial to evaluate both options thoroughly. For those who are struggling to decide, here are some criteria to consider before making the big decision.

1. Look At Your Lifestyle  

Traditional classroom education creates a structured routine for students to follow, a concept that has actually been proven to support and enhance cognitive function and creativity. For many, the structure of classroom learning is a near essential element of learning. 

Additionally, for those who live in close proximity to their college of choice and wish to involve themselves in day-to-day campus life, in-person learning is the better option. Studying on campus also provides a sharp distinction between work and home, a boundary that is important to some.  

On Campus classes will also appeal to those who like having consistent time set aside to help simplify a hectic schedule. 

In contrast, distance learning provides students with a more flexible college experience. It can fit around you, your work schedule, your family commitments, and your social life. While it is less structured, it is a good option if you have a nine-to-five job. 

Taking online classes also opens the door for many people who do not have the means to attend in-person classes or who live too far away from their campus of choice. 

2. Consider Your Learning Style 

Every student has a different learning journey and a different learning style. Some students are visual learners, while some students prefer to learn through audio. Similarly, some students thrive in the classroom, and other students are solo learners who get distracted by large groups. 

For many, the physical presence of an instructor and classmates is stimulating and keeps them engaged. Seeing peers asking questions, studying, and doing well on tests is a great motivator for those who enjoy the social aspect of an educational journey. Staying engaged is vital to the learning process, so for some, in-person learning is often the best option because it provides a more comprehensive learning environment.

For people who do not thrive in the structure of in-person classrooms, studying online is a great alternative. Students all work and learn at different paces, and online classes offer the ability for students to follow their own schedules to meet deadlines. 3. Reflect On Your Personality Type 

Are you an extrovert or an introvert? Maybe you’re easily distracted or lacking in the focus department? These are good questions to ask yourself when you’re choosing between online or in-person learning.  

If you love meeting new people and building relationships, in-person learning is for you. The physicality of in-person classes presents a sense of community that is not as easily cultivated in an online setting. In-person classes better lend themselves to organic discussions where students can bounce ideas off one another and make personal connections with like-minded peers.  

If you are more introverted and find your voice can get drowned out in classroom learning, virtual classes might work better for you. Distance learning gives introverts the time and space they need to contribute to classroom discussion and allows them to thrive in an environment that better fits their personalities. 

If you are nervous about starting your program, creating a calming atmosphere at home with online learning can help ease feelings of anxiety and promote greater productivity.  

4. Look To The Future 

Networking while in college is very important and can prove more difficult without daily face-to-face interactions with instructors and peers. Networking involves establishing connections with people, typically in your field, such as working professionals, experts, or instructors. The purpose of networking is to form relationships with those who will help get you to where you want to go in your career.
